KAPPI Connects Indonesian Coffee Farmer Education with Global Market Opportunities Following SCAJ 2026
Collaboration with Bank Indonesia showcases curated coffees from Indonesian producers while supporting quality development and MSME export readiness.
**JAKARTA, INDONESIA — October 31, 2026** — Strengthening Indonesia's position in the international coffee industry requires a connection between quality development at the farm level and a deeper understanding of global market expectations. The Coffee Development and Education Foundation (KAPPI) is advancing this approach through farmer education, technical mentoring and international coffee diplomacy.
The foundation recently participated in the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ) 2026 exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight, from October 14 to 16. Working with Bank Indonesia, KAPPI introduced curated coffees from farmers participating in the central bank's development programmes, showcasing the diversity of Indonesian coffee to Japanese consumers and industry professionals.
The initiative highlighted the relationship between farmer development, product quality and international market opportunities for Indonesian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
## Strengthening Quality at the Source
Coffee quality begins long before roasting and brewing. Agricultural practices such as soil management, fertilisation, pruning and harvesting can influence production outcomes and quality consistency.
KAPPI's farmer education and mentoring activities focus on improving knowledge and practices in these areas. By strengthening producers' capabilities, the foundation aims to support better coffee quality and the long-term development of Indonesia's coffee-growing communities.
Roby Wibisono of KAPPI emphasises the importance of connecting international coffee promotion with practical learning for farmers. Feedback from overseas consumers, buyers and coffee professionals can provide insights into market preferences and product expectations, informing future producer education and quality-development activities.
## Introducing the Diversity of Indonesian Coffee
At SCAJ 2026, KAPPI presented coffees from Aceh Gayo, Mandheling, Java, Bali and Kalosi Toraja, alongside kopi luwak.
Through aroma evaluation and tasting sessions, visitors discovered characteristics shaped by different growing regions and processing methods. The experience encouraged visitors familiar with Mandheling and Toraja to explore other Indonesian coffee origins.
One notable response came from visitors who described an Indonesian robusta as having sensory characteristics reminiscent of arabica. Although this was an informal tasting impression rather than a scientific finding, it highlighted the importance of evaluating individual coffees through direct sensory experience.
The exhibition also created opportunities to introduce Indonesia's coffee-producing communities and their products to international industry audiences.
## Supporting Coffee MSMEs Through Institutional Collaboration
KAPPI's collaboration with Bank Indonesia played an important role in presenting selected coffees from farmers supported by the central bank's development programmes.
The coffees underwent selection and quality evaluation before being introduced to visitors and industry professionals in Japan.
Such activities help producers and MSMEs develop an understanding of international market requirements, including quality consistency, product differentiation and buyer preferences.
Ricky P. Gozali, Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, has highlighted the importance of understanding Japanese coffee consumers' preferences and presenting Indonesia's finest coffees, with the aim of increasing exports and ultimately improving farmers' livelihoods.
The future potential of Indonesian coffee also received positive recognition from Japanese industry professionals. Yozo Otsuki, CEO of Kyoto-based coffee company Kurasu, expressed appreciation for the remarkable diversity of Indonesian coffee and confidence in its prospects.
These responses offer valuable perspectives for ongoing efforts to strengthen product quality and prepare smaller enterprises for international markets.
## Building International Recognition Through Coffee Diplomacy
KAPPI's participation in SCAJ 2026 forms part of its continued international coffee diplomacy initiatives since 2025. Previous activities have included World Expo Osaka 2025, SCAJ 2025, Foodex Japan 2026 and World of Coffee Bangkok 2026.
Through these engagements, the foundation seeks to extend the benefits of international promotion beyond exhibition participation.
Understanding overseas market expectations can help inform farmer education and quality development while encouraging greater appreciation for the distinctive characteristics of Indonesian coffee.
By connecting agricultural knowledge, institutional partnerships and international market engagement, KAPPI aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia's coffee ecosystem and support more sustainable opportunities for its producers and MSMEs.
