Silverback Torch-On Systems Outlines Fire Safety Questions Edmonton Building Owners Should Ask Before Torch-On Roofing Work

Silverback Torch-On Systems outlines the fire safety steps, training and documents Edmonton building owners should confirm before torch-on roofing work begins.

Silverback Torch-On Systems is encouraging Edmonton building owners and property managers to ask more questions about fire safety before torch-on roofing work begins on their properties.

SBS torch-on roofing is widely used on commercial buildings in Edmonton because of its durability, two-layer protection and strong performance in cold weather and hail. However, it is hot work. Crews use propane torches with open flames to bond membrane layers, and fires can start in hidden areas, such as gaps at parapets or combustible materials beneath the roof. Smouldering material can also ignite after crews leave.

“Building owners don’t need to know how to torch a roof, but they should know what safe torch work looks like,” said a spokesperson for Silverback Torch-On Systems. “Fire risk on a roof is often hidden, which is why procedures after torching matter as much as those during it. The right questions before a project starts can prevent serious losses.”

The company recommends owners confirm the following before work begins:

Torch operators have completed torch-specific safety training. In Alberta, the Alberta Roofing Contractors Association offers a Torch Safety for Roofers course, and its members must re-certify torch mechanics every three years.
A fire watch will continue after torching stops each day. Industry guidance from FM Global calls for at least one hour of post-work fire watch, with longer monitoring where thermal imaging isn’t used.
Fire extinguishers will be on the roof near every torch in use.
Propane cylinders will be stored and secured safely.
The contractor carries liability insurance covering hot work and provides a WCB Alberta clearance letter.

The company also advises owners to coordinate with contractors to protect rooftop air intakes, notify tenants, protect sensitive spaces below the roof, and confirm fire alarms and sprinklers are working. Owners should also check whether their own building insurer has requirements for hot work.

“A contractor’s safety culture shows in the details: organized sites, clear fall protection, and crews who can explain their procedures,” the spokesperson added. “Contractors who take safety seriously usually take quality seriously too.”
