Primo Car Removal Sydney summarises how number plates determine whether NSW owners lodge a notice of disposal or cancel registration when a registered vehicle is sold to a wrecker or scrapped.

ST MARYS, NSW – Primo Car Removal Sydney, a vehicle recycling business based in St Marys, New South Wales, has published a summary of how number plates affect the paperwork owners must complete when they scrap or sell a registered vehicle. The summary is based on Service NSW guidance and sets out two separate processes that owners sometimes confuse.
Owners must submit a notice of disposal when they sell or dispose of a NSW-registered vehicle, which includes cars, motorcycles and trailers, and the notice informs Transport for NSW. Service NSW advises that the notice should be submitted immediately after the sale. The notice can be lodged online or on a paper form, and the details are published on the Service NSW website.
For vehicles sold to a wrecker, the position depends on the plates. A notice of disposal is required only if the vehicle is sold to a wrecker with its number plates attached. If the vehicle is sold to a wrecker without plates, no notice of disposal is needed, but the registration must be cancelled. Any plates removed from the vehicle must be returned to a service centre.
The plate type also matters. Owners of personalised or special plates can replace them with a set of general plates before the sale and keep the special plates, or exchange them onto another vehicle registered in their name. Owners who hand over a vehicle with special plates still attached may lose access to them, so the choice is best made before the vehicle is collected.
Two further steps are recommended once a vehicle has been disposed of. Service NSW advises sellers to remove the vehicle's registration number from their toll account and to contact their comprehensive insurer where applicable. Keeping a copy of the notice of disposal, or a record of the registration cancellation, gives the owner evidence that responsibility for the vehicle has changed.
A company spokesperson said plate handling is the most common point of confusion. "The paperwork depends on whether the plates leave with the vehicle or stay with the owner," the spokesperson said. "Owners should check the current Service NSW requirements before the vehicle is collected, because the rules apply to the registered owner and not to the buyer."
Vehicles that reach the end of their working life in Australia are generally dismantled so that steel, other metals, usable parts and fluids can be recovered. Facilities that handle vehicle waste in New South Wales are subject to environmental regulation, and requirements differ between states and territories.
