The American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) is drawing attention to its Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PTC). It enables healthcare professionals to demonstrate what they know about specimen collection, patient care, and laboratory safety.

Phlebotomy technicians support diagnostic services in hospitals, physician offices, outpatient clinics, medical laboratories, blood donation centers, and long-term care facilities. Their work involves more than drawing blood. Accurate patient identification, correct specimen labeling, infection control, and safe handling procedures all feed into reliable laboratory testing and patient safety.

NCCA Accreditation Supports Certification Standards

AMCA’s Phlebotomy Technician Certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The NCCA is an independent body that reviews certification programs according to the accepted industry standards. Its accreditation process considers how a certification program is developed, administered, and maintained over time.

This gives healthcare employers context when evaluating a candidate’s credentials. NCCA’s accreditation indicates that the certification program has gone under external evaluation against recognised standards. AMCA encourages candidates and employers to verify its accreditation status through the NCCA program directory. The association also advises candidates to confirm applicable state requirements, as phlebotomy regulations and eligibility criteria can vary by jurisdiction.

Assessing Knowledge Across Core Phlebotomy Competencies

The PTC examination covers the key areas of phlebotomy practice. Candidates can take the exam online or on paper, with live remote proctoring also available. The listed exam fee (including study materials) is $119.

The examination blueprint spans six competency areas:

Collection of blood and non-blood specimens: 29%
Professionalism and regulatory compliance: 18%
Patient identification, assessment, and site preparation: 17%
Infection control and safety: 16%
Equipment selection and maintenance: 10%
Specimen processing and transportation: 10%

These competency areas reflect the knowledge technicians need to prepare patients, perform venipuncture and capillary collection, label specimens, and follow safety procedures.

NCCA accredited phlebotomy certification does not replace supervised clinical practice. Employers must evaluate a candidate's hands-on ability, communication skills, adherence to workplace protocols, and experience with the patient populations they serve.
