New Workplace Research Signals More Flexible Business Relocations in 2027

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., October 7, 2026 – As businesses accelerate their adoption of artificial intelligence, its impact is beginning to extend beyond software, staffing and productivity. New workplace research suggests AI could also influence what companies need from their offices and how they approach business relocations, reconfigurations and workplace upgrades in 2027.

AI Is Beginning to Influence Office Space Planning

The CBRE’s 2026 Americas Office Occupier Sentiment Survey found that 23% of organizations say AI is already influencing their space-planning decisions, while another 30% expect it to have a meaningful impact within the next two years.

The findings challenge the assumption that increased AI adoption will automatically result in fewer employees and smaller offices. Instead, CBRE found:

50% expect AI adoption to increase the need for multipurpose, reconfigurable space.

30% anticipate greater demand for specialized AI-focused environments, including laboratories, innovation studios and training rooms.

36% expect AI to encourage investment in higher-quality workplace amenities and experiences.

37% expect AI to contribute to lower headcounts and reduced space requirements.

The mixed findings point toward a workplace environment in which companies may need to reconfigure, consolidate, relocate, or modernize office space rather than simply reduce it.

For Capitol Relocation & Logistics, a Connecticut moving and logistics company, these changes also create new considerations for commercial relocation planning.

“An office relocation increasingly involves more than transferring desks and equipment between addresses. Companies may also be changing how the workplace functions, where technology is located, and how teams use the space,” according to a representative from Capitol Relocation & Logistics.

Global Research Shows a Similar AI Shift

The trend extends beyond CBRE’s findings. The JLL 2026 Future of Work Survey findings, based on responses from more than 2,200 C-suite executives and corporate real estate leaders across 21 countries, found that 78% believe AI will significantly affect real estate portfolio strategies and corporate real estate functions over the next three to five years.
Yet only 15% have progressed beyond exploration and initial deployment to actively optimizing AI within corporate real estate operations.

Flexible Offices Could Become More Important

As businesses determine which roles will change, which teams will expand, and how employees will interact with AI systems, predicting long-term space requirements can become more difficult.

For companies considering a move in 2027, flexibility could therefore become a larger part of relocation planning. Rather than planning exclusively around the number of desks required today, businesses may need to consider:

spaces that can be reconfigured as teams change;

technology and infrastructure requirements;

collaborative and specialized work areas;

storage for furniture and equipment not required every day;

phased relocations that allow operations to continue; and

facilities capable of adapting to future workforce needs.

Office Moves Are Becoming Workplace Transformations

For commercial movers and logistics providers, these trends can broaden the scope of an office move. Businesses may need to relocate IT equipment and workstations, install modular furniture, move technology into new collaborative areas, store surplus assets, or coordinate transitions among multiple facilities.

Capitol provides commercial moving, workplace solutions, data center moving, office furniture installation, warehousing and logistics services. Its workplace moving and logistical solutions for businesses are designed to support office relocations and reconfigurations while limiting interruptions to workplace operations.

The company also operates a 58,000-square-foot warehouse where office equipment can be stored during workplace transitions. Capitol’s office furniture installation and secure storage services include support for businesses moving into new spaces or reconfiguring existing workplaces.

What Businesses Should Consider Before a 2027 Office Move

Businesses considering a 2027 relocation or major office reconfiguration should plan beyond transportation alone. Inventorying furniture and technology, identifying assets that will be reused or stored, coordinating IT infrastructure, planning installation schedules and determining which departments can move in phases can help reduce operational disruption.
The objective is increasingly not simply to move an existing office from one address to another. It is to determine what the next workplace needs to become.

As AI adoption accelerates, that distinction may become one of the defining considerations for commercial relocations in 2027.
