ADELAIDE, SA, 27 October 2026: For many people who have moved to Australia from India, festivals bring the strongest memories of home. This Thursday, Rasoi & Barrel is offering a welcoming place to share one of them, with a free Karwa Chauth afternoon open to the whole community.
Karwa Chauth is traditionally observed by married women, who fast during the day and pray for the wellbeing and long life of their husbands. At the end of the fast, the moon is traditionally sighted, often through a decorated sieve, before the fast is broken. Many families also mark the day with festive clothing, songs, dance and the telling of the Karwa Chauth Katha, the traditional story of the festival. Today, many couples observe it together.
The celebration at Rasoi & Barrel takes place on Thursday 29 October 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Katha will be told every 30 minutes, so guests who arrive at different times can listen. There will also be dance, masala chai and photo opportunities for families and friends.
Entry is free. People of all backgrounds are welcome to come along, enjoy the afternoon and learn about the festival.
