Georgia–10/12/26: Medicare can begin before age 65 for people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), but not right away. Eligibility generally starts after 24 months of SSDI benefits, according to Social Security. Value Financial Protection, a Georgia insurance agency, provides Medicare enrollment assistance in Georgia to people with disabilities and their families as Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
The timeline surprises many people. SSDI has its own five-month waiting period, so Medicare often arrives about two and a half years after a disability begins. Enrollment in Original Medicare is automatic, according to Medicare.gov, but decisions about drug coverage, Medicare Advantage, and Medigap remain with the beneficiary. Knowing these dates early helps families avoid gaps in coverage.
Georgia adds another consideration. USAFacts reports that about 1.99 million Georgians were enrolled in Medicare in 2025, with roughly 88% aged 65 or older. Georgia also requires insurers that sell Medigap to people 65 and older to offer it to people under 65, though HealthInsurance.org reports premiums are often much higher.
“Medicare does not start the day disability benefits do, and that gap catches many families off guard,” said Latonia Henry, founder of Value Financial Protection. “Our goal is to explain the timeline and the choices in plain language, so people can plan ahead and compare their options with confidence.”
Indeed, coverage choices go beyond Original Medicare. Beneficiaries can compare Medicare Advantage plans in Georgia, which may include drug coverage, or pair Original Medicare with a separate drug plan and Medicare Supplement plans in Georgia. Returning to work does not automatically end coverage. Social Security says premium-free Part A can continue for at least 93 months after a trial work period, as long as the disabling condition still meets its rules.
People weighing these decisions before the December 7 deadline can request a Medicare consultation in Georgia with a licensed advisor, who can walk through each option, and learn more at valuefinancialprotection.com.
