Who Is Really Paying for AI? Stratrix Analysis Finds the Risk Is in the Promises, Not the Spending

Five companies spent $601 billion on capital investment in a year, 85% of their operating cash. Contracted backlog at four cloud companies grew from $608 billion to $2.3 trillion in two years, much of it resting on a few AI developers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUDBURY, Mass., Oct. 27, 2026 — Stratrix today published "Who Is Really Paying for AI?", the first Deep Dive from The Read-Through, its new monthly analysis that tests a widely repeated claim against company filings and federal data. The analysis finds that the AI build-out is mostly not being paid for with venture money. Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Oracle spent $601 billion on property and equipment in the latest twelve months, 85% of the $710 billion their businesses generated in cash from operations. US venture funding of AI and machine-learning companies was $222.1 billion in all of 2025, according to PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association.

The risk, the analysis finds, sits in the promises meant to pay that spending back. Contracted backlog at Microsoft, Oracle, Alphabet and Amazon grew from $608 billion in June 2024 to $2,338 billion in June 2026. Where companies have disclosed who signed, the answers are AI developers: about 45% of Microsoft's $625 billion commercial backlog is from OpenAI, and Amazon's two backlog jumps in 2026 came with OpenAI and Anthropic expansions of $100 billion or more each.

The filings also show suppliers standing behind their customers. Nvidia has agreed to guarantees capped at $105 billion for data center leases taken by an OpenAI affiliate. Meta reports a maximum exposure to loss of $68.4 billion in two data center ventures it does not consolidate. Amazon has agreed to make up to $20 billion of financing available to Anthropic as it delivers computing capacity.

“The popular argument is about who is spending. The more useful question is who stands behind the promises. When a supplier guarantees its customer's lease or lends it the money to keep buying, it is carrying part of that customer's risk, and that is the exposure a board should watch.” said Ravi Mehra, Strategy Analyst, Stratrix.

The analysis also measures the build-out against the economy and against demand. US private investment in information processing equipment and software reached 5.05% of GDP in the second quarter of 2026, above the dot-com peak of 4.46% in the fourth quarter of 2000. Meanwhile, 24.6% of US businesses told the Census Bureau they had used AI in the latest two-week survey period.

The Deep Dive includes 10 charts and tables, a methodology section and a claims ledger that traces every figure and quotation to its source. It is free to read at www.stratrix.com/read-through/who-is-really-paying-for-ai, with a PDF edition and an Excel data appendix available to download. The analysis is not investment advice.
